Muhammad Shafique Farooqi

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shafique Farooqi is a legendary Pakistani artist, calligrapher, and art educator whose work spans more than six decades. Born in 1942 in Sialkot, he has become an iconic figure in both the national and international art scenes, known for his unique ability to merge traditional Islamic art with modern techniques and spiritual themes.
He earned a Master’s degree from Istanbul University and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Spiritual Arts from the Royal American University. Over the course of his career, he has produced over 13,000 art pieces and held 107 solo exhibitions across countries including the USA, UK, Turkey, Germany, France, Egypt, and Pakistan.

Prof. Farooqi is best known for developing the “Symbiosis Concept” or “Journey of Line”, a groundbreaking artistic philosophy that symbolizes the unity of existence through fluid, interconnected lines. Deeply inspired by Sufi mysticism, particularly the Whirling Dervishes (Sema), his work is a visual journey through spirituality, philosophy, and emotion.

His calligraphic art is especially celebrated for transforming Arabic letters into expressive, living forms—moving beyond traditional styles to evoke mood, motion, and meaning. He also gained international acclaim for his paintings on disabled individuals, which have been recognized in Turkey, Germany, Holland, and the UK for their compassion and social relevance.
He spent 17 years in Turkey (1983–1999), where he served as an advisor at the Florya Rehabilitation Center, taught Islamic art, and further developed his spiritual and symbolic style.Prof. Farooqi has received 29 prestigious awards and 14 honors, including the President of Pakistan’s Pride of Performance Award in 2021. He has authored eight books, the latest focusing on themes of divine unity and mysticism.

Today, he continues to work on his “Journey of Line” series, aiming to visually express the vision of Allama Iqbal. His legacy is that of a visionary artist whose work blends aesthetic mastery with spiritual insight, leaving a lasting impact on art, education, and humanity.

As an artist he has succeeded in bringing anguish in the soul to his art of painting. Though trained on the conventional lines, He has evolved his own vision of creative consciousness and has completed a work which affirms his originality and commitment for beauty which lies hidden in the visual scenes, and which has been released only by him. His paintings have given something creative to his age, and in this lies his own fulfillment and satisfaction as an artist.
